Gift certificates at a bookstore. Most men can read and could find something they'd like at a bookstore. And you can buy stuff to eat in most bookstores these days, if they can't read.

If the guy is into sports, sporting event tix are always a sure thing, however they will hurt your pocket book for really good seats.

A lot of guys (like me -- honey, are you listening??) enjoy having projects they can get into. Give a guy a fun project that he can enjoy learning about and completing. Not too crazy hard to do though, unless he's a glutton for punishment kind of guy, in which case you should just get him another pair of running shoes.

  For me, it would be a subscription to make magazine http://www.makezine.com or a fun kit from http://www.sparkfun.com if your man is even a quasi-nerd, you can't go wrong with either of these.

I've seen similar "find a good gift" websites in the past but it looks like gifts.com finally got it right.
As a quick test, I ran myself through the quick "gift finder" and of the 12 items that showed up on the front page, I already have (or have done) at least 4 of them - and all of the others were pretty cool by my standards.

I can tell you two presents that went over very well with my husband. The first was a Chrismtas present one year - pilot lessons for a day. The second was his most recent birthday present, which was skydiving with his wife. It's way more fun when I can get him a present that I, too, can enjoy. I highly recommend skydiving for anyone who's never been. It's worth it to spring the extra cash for the video.

The Genographic Project Participation Kit from National Geographic allows you to swab your cheek for a DNA sample and submit it to the lab for either mitochondrial dna (mother's line) testing or Y-chromosome (men only - father's line) testing.

The site says, "Your results will reveal your deep ancestry along a single line of direct descent (paternal or maternal) and show the migration paths they followed thousands of years ago. Your results will also place you on a particular branch of the human family tree. Some anthropological stories are more detailed than others, depending upon the lineage you belong to."

Check it out. It's a good present for guys and girls alike.
